HELP PROTECT THE NOOKSACK RIVER

River Steward Internships for Summer 2010

Nooksack River Stewards Program:

A collaboration between the United States Forest Service and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), this program is designed to provide salmon-focused environmental educational opportunities to recreational users of the upper portions of the Nooksack River, focusing on Forest Service properties.  Interpretive displays, booths, signage, one-on-one contacts, presentations, handouts, brochures, campfire talks, and river walks will be used to reach out to recreational users to increase their knowledge of fishing regulations, salmonids found in the river, salmon habitat requirements, and stewardship practices.


River Steward Internship Position Announcement:

Interns are needed to work with a team of NSEA staff and volunteer River Stewards to coordinate this public educational outreach program.  These are field-based positions located in the upper reaches of the Nooksack River. Internship positions with the River Stewards program open May 10th, 2010 and are open until filled.


Team Work: River Stewards must be responsible, respectful, and able to work well with others.


Time Availability: River Stewards must be able to work between 10-30 hours per week from mid-June through early October, with July through September being the primary focusShifts take place during daytime hours, Friday through Sunday. Hours can be used as internship credits at WWU or other educational institutions with advisor's permission.


Education/Experience: Interns should have some knowledge of salmonids, salmonid habitat, stewardship ethics, and experience in environmental education, environmental policy, and some experience in hiking and outdoor recreation. Interns should have strong work ethics and work well with others as River Stewards are expected to work in teams.


Transportation: River Stewards must be able to get to NSEA's office location and carpool from there to the river locations. Personal transportation is desirable, but not necessary, and all mileage used toward this program will be reimbursed at $0.505 per mile.


Trainings: Trainings are provided and will be scheduled for early June.  Weekly check-in meetings through the summer will be scheduled as well.
